Thoroughly blend shortening, sugar and egg. Mix in flour, salt and flavorings. Divide dough in half. Tint half of dough with red food coloring. Leave other part plain. Roll small piece of plain dough between palms to 6-inch length. Roll small piece of red dough in the same manner to same length. Twist together and shape to resemble a cane. Bake 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
Yield 2 1/2 dozen cookies.
